Are you happy at work? Is it them or you? Find happiness at work
We all face the dilemma of happiness at work. It is one the
most important factors that influence the quality of work input by an
individual. One falls in either of the two categories, first one is in
profession one always wanted to be in or one is in the profession that one
didn't expect to be in. In the first case, chances are one would find happiness in
most cases. However, the second case is
the one most of us belong to. Most of the people in the world are in the
profession that didn't want/plan/expect to be in. Nevertheless we should always try to keep ourselves in happiness.
Now in either case, the happiness at work of an individual
is mostly always dependent on the individual and rarely on the external
factors. Most of us end up continuing working in our non-chosen field because
of life pressures/money requirement/ children or other reasons. This leads to
more frequent boredom, concentration loss and loss of happiness. We can prevent this by treating ourselves with little goodies every now and then like going on a vacation to maintain our happiness. This way we ensure our
happiness is on the priority list and we never fail to be happy at work.
So many times people tend to complain that the main reason
of their unhappiness at work is the boss. It is highly imperative to have an
understanding boss who can support in times of need and maintain your levels of happiness. In fact a third of people
who leave their jobs is because attitude of their boss and loosing happiness because of him/her. Sometimes it can be
challenge to gel with a person but with a careful approach it can be done
easily. It is better to be straight forward with your boss regarding your
concerns and ensuring your happiness. If he/she doesn't address them repeatedly, it’s better to talk to HR
and senior management at once to resolve it so as not to loose your happiness at work. Even HR people would recognize the fact
happiness at work is very important and would help one to attain happiness.
Politics at work can be very interruptive to the entire
environment and overall bonding levels between staff members and their happiness. Most of
unproductive workers are likely to be more politics oriented and find their happiness in it. There are two
ways to handle politics in office. The best way is to stay out of politics.
Just do your work and don’t get involved in anyone’s business and any nonsense
that goes around to keep your happiness intact. Have good relations with anyone and everyone to spread happiness around you. Be sweet to people and they will be good to
you to increase happiness score. The second and more daring way is to create your own politics and be on
top of anyone else. You create the gossips, news and activities and thus be in control of your happiness. This is often done
by those who want to more up the ladder. This way you can be the star and at
the same time have people follow you and respect you and increase happiness. This creates space and
people look up to you to solve their problems and help to increase their happiness. Politics done in a good way is
good for your organization as well. Either way you will be happy as you will be
in control of yourself and the situations and have happiness at work.
People who are not able to perform the job at optimum levels
also face the problem of lack of happiness at work. The way out of this is to
seek others opinion on how you can be better. It’s also beneficial to check the
best practices and seek your superiors help. This would enable their happiness as well as yours. Sometimes a simple demonstration by
another person is of great help. I have always followed my method. Whenever I used
to come back home, I would spend 5 minutes of time with myself thinking about
things that I could improve on the next day and what to do to improve them.
These 5 minutes always helped me to stay ahead of the game and become top
performer and get higher levels of happiness.
Sometimes some people are also drama kings or drama queens.
It is highly suggested not to indulge in such tendencies and stick to the work so as not to fuck the happiness of others.
Drama at work place is not appreciated and is a total waste of time. It also
helps one to make enemies or rivals at work and reduce happiness levels of everyone around. This is a total waste of time and
effort not only for the one who does it but also for the ones around decreasing their overall happiness. There is
a total feeling of disgust which begins to affect the general moral and happiness. Usually in
such cases the person responsible for it ends up earning the wrath of the
management or the people around leading to loss of employment.
There are some workplaces which involve multi-tasking and
co-operation and coordination between different departments. People often find
it tough in the beginning to adjust in such job roles, which leads to less happiness at work and dissatisfaction. One should give himself/herself more
time to adjust in the environment and also try to build better relationships
with others. Time also smoothens out things and makes it easier to adjust the
pulls and pushes thus leading to better happiness levels.
In this article I have highlighted several reasons and situations which can be detrimental to an employee’s happiness at work and the steps one can take to correct them. However we live in the world and almost everything is imperfect and it is our own approach to happiness which makes things perfect or not. Our happiness is much more dependent on us and not on others. It is to do with the fact how we approach the issues, whether we take them with cool head or we make a big issue of a trivial matter. One has to adjust to the existing environment and culture of the workplace as it cannot adjust to us. So it’s better we become the kings of our happiness.
